NOAA Research Facility on the campus of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, in beautiful La Jolla, California is the new, state-of-the-art research facility designed to incorporate sustainable “green” design features throughout the incredible coastal-inspired building. This is the largest green roof construction in all of San Diego County. The landscape portion of the project was designed to blend into the existing hillside using native species. Marina will be revegetating multiple segments of the campus, incorporating local preservation measures throughout the surrounding area, and developing custom lightweight soil mixes for use in the green roof gardens.

Hotel Coronado

Prior to its development in the 1880s as a luxury seaside resort, the Coronado peninsula was a brush-covered sandspit accessible only by rowboat. To create the lush landscape desired for the site, local horticulturist Kate Sessions selected hardy, drought-tolerant plants from comparable coastal climates like Mexico and the Canary Islands. When the Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888, its grounds boasted ornamental and specimen species that had not yet been planted in California.

Envisioned as a tropical garden at the heart of the hotel by developers Elisha Spurr Babcock and Hampton Story, and created by Sessions, a rectangular courtyard was filled with rich arrangements of palms, cycads, ferns, birds of paradise, and other exotic species. Designed by architects James and Merritt Reid, verandas and red cupolas jut out of the hotel’s white-clapboard façade to overlook the central courtyard gardens below. Between the hotel and the ocean, terraces give way to an elliptical, open lawn and colorful, low-lying plantings. Sandy berms planted with aloe and agave protect the beachfront lawn from erosion. Plantings along the resort’s meandering pathways echo Sessions’ original plant palette, and a dragon tree planted by Sessions along the Vista Walk is considered one of the hotel’s most iconic landscape features. Although the 28-acre property has been updated and renovated on several occasions, many of Sessions’ key specimen plants and primary design elements remain. Hotel del Coronado was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

Pasadena City Hall

Located at 100 North Garfield Avenue, City Hall was designed by John Bakewell & Arthur Brown who were influenced by the early Renaissance style of 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Construction was completed on December 27, 1927.

For the most part the City is transitioning to native landscaping at its own facilities, including branch libraries, community centers, and even neighborhood fire stations.

Yet the highest-profile public facility in Pasadena – City Hall – has remained landscaped with water-intensive turf and other non-native plants. The public face of City Hall is framed by ornamental grass, shrubs, and magnolia trees at home in the wetter southeastern United States. Only the interior courtyard of the building features any landscaping recommended by PWP, namely several Coast Live Oak trees native to California.

Exposition Light Rail Transit Phase 2 Design/Build Project

Marina collaborated with Skanska together with 29 other small businesses in completing this 6.6-mile Exposition Light Rail Transit Phase 2 project extends the Expo light rail line from Culver City to Santa Monica, just four blocks from the Pacific Ocean. The scope of work included 14 miles of track as well as five at-grade stations and two aerial stations. Additionally, the project included one mile of elevated transitway and added a new bicycle path adjacent to the rail line.

San Manuel Casino

Regulus Solar Farm

The 81.6 MW facility is one of SunEdison's largest utility scale solar power plants in California and is anticipated to provide almost $184 million in revenue to local businesses, governments and households during the first 20 years of operation.

Schaefer Ranch Park

This 6.3-acre park features a "tot lot" for 2- to 5-year-olds, an apparatus play area for 5- to 13-year-olds, a covered picnic structure with eight tables, a tennis court, a basketball court, and a pair of game tables for checkers or chess. A unique "pocket park," featuring horseshoe pits and additional picnic tables, is located just across the street.

Citadel Outlets

The Citadel Outlets are an outlet mall in the City of Commerce, California along the Santa Ana Freeway southeast of Downtown Los Angeles, which features the Exotic Revival architecture of a tire factory, whose partial remnants the complex occupies, built in the style of an Assyrian castle of King Sargon II.

West Valley- Mission Community College District

Mission’s renovation project is part of the eventual replacement of the original Main Building and other facilities in the main campus. Another significant part of this project will be the demolition and reconstruction of the main entrance to the campus from Mission College Blvd. It will include improved traffic routing and new college entry signage consisting of vertical granite slabs, concrete and landscape construction and erosion control.

Inland Rail Trail

The three-mile section of the Inland Rail Trail is divided into south and north segments. The south segment is 2.5 miles long and runs between Cherimoya Drive and Mar Vista Drive in unincorporated San Diego County and the City of Vista. The north segment is 0.5 miles long and runs between North Drive in the City of Vista and North Melrose Drive in the City of Oceanside.

The "San Marcos to Vista" segment of the Inland Rail Trail is generally located in the North County Transit District (NCTD) right-of-way an, provides access to five SPRINTER stations. Marina Landscape is honored to work hand in hand with Pulice in making this project.

Crown Valley Park

Crown Valley Community Park in Laguna Niguel is one of the city's premier parks, offering a variety of amenities and activities for local residents. On park grounds, you will find an outdoor amphitheater for local shows and summer concerts, a community pool operated year round and rental facilities that can hold dinner banquets, private functions and school-related parties. You can also find baseball fields, soccer fields and plenty of picnic tables to host parties during the day. One of the highlights of this park is the 18-acre Niguel Botanical Preserve. This park is centrally located and can be found easily along Crown Valley Parkway. Marina Landscape is honored to work with the the City of Laguna Niguel in remodeling their community park.

Desi House

Ricky Ricardo from the "I love Lucy" show and was later purchased by Jurupa Community Service District. This 14 acres land includes a multi-purpose trail that connects Eastvale to the Coast to Crest Santa Ana River Trail.

Hoover High School

Sofi Stadium

Sofi Stadium finally opened September 13, 2020 with the Rams hosting the first Sunday night game of the season.

UCI Humanities Building

Working with Hensel Phelps Construction Co., Marina Design Group and Marina Construction are part of the design build team for the new UCI Humanities building located on the Irvine campus. The design team has designed the planting to interface with the existing plant palette of the UCI campus, using low maintenance planting as well as allowing accent planting at key interface points to the building. The rear and sides of the building have a variety of California native plants that identify the edges of the rear plaza, as well as guiding students down the walkway to the rear classrooms. Marina Design Group has utilized natives that are appropriate for each particular landscape condition, for a reduction in the amount of water usage and maintenance.

Raley Field

Raley Field is home of the River Cats and the stadium opened on May 15, 2000. This Triple A Baseball Club of the Oakland Athletics is situated on the shores of the Sacramento River with a capacity for 14,680 fans. The field surfaces were designed by Murray Cook, MLB’s official turf consultant and all materials were selected and developed by Marina’s in-house sports group and Matt LaRose, the River Cats first Head Groundskeeper.

UC Santa Cruz Coastal Science Campus

In tandem with construction of the University's new Coastal Biology Building. Marina was contracted in 2016 by Graniterock Construction of Watsonville to install over 325,000 square feet of native sustainable landscape throughout the Coastal Science Campus, including over 66, 000 plants, one mile each of roadside planting and pathway, two acres of meadow planting, and over an acre of bioretention planting.

Of primary importance throughout construction were the protection of the existing wildlife habitat, the exclusive use of locally-collected native plant material, and the strict planting protocols carefully monitored for compliance by the UCSC project staff and Plant Science Department. During the course of the project, Marina worked closely with the project design team to engineer time-saving and cost-saving methods to meet the project schedule and the plant establishment success rate. Along with University faculty and students, Marina willingly engaged in the beneficial exchange of information and ideas, contributing greatly to the project's successful outcome.

Riverside National Cemetery
